The Season In The Olive Groves In Tuscany Italy
Olive oil is very important sector of the culture of Tuscany, but also an essential economic resource that has been able to recover after critical periods and difficulties with constant innovations, new techniques, machinery and modern plantations. It's just the combinations of traditional skills handed down in the course of life with the most recent research, to assure the production of Tuscan extra-virgin olive oil.
Olive trees are very generous plants, but they require constant care throughout the different seasons in order to keep them healthy and fruitful. In Maremma Tuscany, the calendar of the farmers may vary from year to year. Higher or lower temperatures, droughts, humidity of frost may cause early or forward development of the leafage as well as affecting olives ripening. Soon after Christmas, it is the best time for treating the plants with a fertilizer, so that the transformation of those substances into the required nitrogen would be completed in early spring when it is warmer and the olive tree will start to flower. February and March is when plants are verbalized and this is the best time for pruning. In the warmer days of April trees awake with new leaves bud.
The vegetative activity usually last until the end of June, when the heat and droughts of the summer months will reduce it. Olive trees blossoming is a really experience. The inflorescence bear numerous tightly packed pale pink flowers, hardly visible on the upper branches with southern exposure.
Those flowers portend harvest outcome. Not all of them will become olives. Some of them will fall and only the few ones left on the tree will actually turn into small olives. On August green pruning is performed. The suckers and the rootsuckers at the bottom are cut to convey the energy of the tree onto the olives. During the more humid September, a plants are treated with copper sulphate. Between October and December, finally, the olives will turn yellow, green, purple or black and the pulp will get softer. This is harvesting time in Maremma Tuscany.
