Geeks On Site: Tips On How To Get The Most Out Of Google
Now that we have reviewed alternative search engines to Google, we would like to take a moment to remind you why you might still prefer to stay with the search giant. We know that most things can be found on Google and with the list below we want to help you find the information faster!
1. Exact term. If you are looking for an exact phrase or set of words, put them in quotation marks (example: “potato salad”) and Google will search the term for you, instead of searching for each word separately.
2. Define word. If you are not sure of what a less common word might mean, you can easily find its meaning by adding define: in front of the word you need clarification on. For example, define: amorphous.
3. Maps. This might be self-evident, but in case you didn't know it already, if you type in the country, state, city or even zip code followed by map Google will give you the map of any location in the US, and most locations in the world.
4. Time. Same goes for the current time in different locations of the world. For example, if you type in time Australia Google will give you a list of the five different time zones in Australia, with example cities.
5. Currency conversion. Need to know how much those pesos you have in your drawer from your last trip to Cancun are worth? Just type in 100 pesos in USD.
6. Unit conversion. Trying to figure out the metric system can be a headache, but not if you're in front of the computer. Google's built in converter can help you with this one too, just try 100 km in miles.
7. Calculator. Many web surfers might be unaware that for basic math calculations you don't need to search for an online calculator anymore. You can enter the calculation straight into the search field and Google will do the math for you.
8. Music and video. We all know Youtube, but every now and then we might just want to save some of that content in our computers or portables devices, like iPods or Blackberrys. To find free downloadable material in Google use the following formula: intitle:index.of (song or video you are looking for)file extension. Ex: intitle:index.of (we will rock you)mp3 or intitle:index.of (the lion king)avi.
We hope you found this information useful; and we bet you are waiting to see what new features Google will come up with.
