Set Up A Wi-Fi Network In Four Simple Steps
Wireless Fidelity or Wi-Fi is a technology that is used to create a network between computers and internet device (like modem) to exchange data without using any wires. It mostly works under high speed internet connections. A Wi-Fi network is often referred to as WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) which is based on IEEE's 802.11 standards.
The advantage of setting up a Wi-Fi network is that you do not require connecting the Ethernet cable every time you want to browse the internet. You can transfer files and folders, browse the web, stream audio and video etc. To set up a Wi-Fi network, you need a Wi-Fi router, a set of Ethernet cables (for connecting the router to the modem) and a Wi-Fi dongle if your PC is not equipped with a built-in Wi-Fi.
Once you have these things ready, choose a suitable place for stacking up the router so that you can conveniently access the internet. You can then set up a Wi-Fi network in four easy steps as follows:
1.Link all the devices
First and foremost, connect your internet modem to the Wi-Fi router using an Ethernet cable. Make sure that you plug-in the cable to the port labeled ‘Internet' on the Wi-Fi router. Else, for majority of the routers, you will end up configuring it the wrong way. After that, connect your system to the Wi-Fi router with Ethernet jacks for the purpose of router configuration. Once the wiring up is done, switch on the modem, router and the PC in that sequence. The sequence is essential for each device to identify connection of the other device that comes before it.
2.Configure the network
Go through the user manual of the Wi-Fi router in detail before you start configuring. Note that the default IP address of the router and log on to the address window through the web browser on your PC. The login window will ask for admin username and password that is commonly found in the user manual.
After you have logged in, you can locate the settings page of the router. Before doing anything else, change the default admin password to prevent unauthorized access to the network. Anyone who knows the admin password can change the configuration of the router.
Your next step is to change the network SSID name of the router. A wireless network is identified by its SSID which is used to gain access to the internet. Select a SSID name of your choice and save the settings. Restart the router for the changes to take effect.
3.Secure the network with a password
Once the router boots up, your Wi-Fi network is ready for use. The network can be accessed by anyone who has a built-in Wi-Fi on the desktop, tablet and smartphone. In other words the network is open for all. To stop untrustworthy users from accessing the network, you are advised to secure it with a password. An open network results in the consumption of bandwidth by unsolicited users and is also vulnerable to cyber crimes being carried out.
Wi-Fi routers have encryption at many different levels depending upon their make and model. The basic and the easiest to implement is WEP encryption. Depending upon your usage, you can also apply WPA Personal and WPA Enterprise encryption for better protection.
4.Start Browsing!
After securing your network, plug-out the Ethernet cable and go to the Wi-Fi networks tab to find all the wireless networks in your vicinity. Choose your network, key in the password and start browsing! See if signal strength is sufficient for fast access. If not, place the router to a more convenient place.
Wi-Fi networks are a popular medium for browsing the internet these days. Wi-Fi routers have different specifications and a specific range for signal availability. Wi-Fi networks are found in every household and offices these days. It is preferred over wired networks for its mobility. You can place the router on your study table and browse comfortably sitting somewhere else. Always ensure that the network is protected so as to prevent unauthorized usage.
