Using Your BlackBerry Storm as a Modem
If you have ever been in a location that did not have Wi-Fi access or a Internet connection, here are the steps to creating a modem connection with your BlackBerry Storm. This is actually how I am currently writing this article and proves to be a very effective internet source. I do highly recommend however that you have a unlimited data plan from your carrier, and check to make sure there are not any extra charges for tethering your BlackBerry to your laptop.
If you have the BlackBerry Desktop Manager then all you will need to do is attach your BlackBerry via USB and create a new connection, the Desktop Manager will automatically install the drivers that are needed for this feature. If you do not, then install the program before continuing. Note on this, you will have to have the BlackBerry Desktop Manger installed and running at all times to be able to use your BlackBerry as a Modem.
Verifying your Modem Driver
Make sure that your phone is connected to a USB 2.0 port and that your BlackBerry Desktop Manager is running, if it then lets start! Go to the Control Panel and click on Phone and Modem Options in Classic view. You should see a Standard Modem on COM Port COMxx, xx being a number. If you do then go ahead to Verify your Modem is functioning. If not follow these steps. Make sure that you have your "RIM Virtual Serial Port" drivers installed, go to Control Panel, Hardware, Device Manager, Ports COM & LPT to find out which COM Port your Modem is on, it will say something like "RIM Virtual Serial Port v2 COMxx. This way you will know what COM port your device is utilizing. After that go back to the Control Panel click on Phone and Modem and Remove the modem. To reinstall the modem you will click on "Add". You will need to select the option "Standard 33600 bps Modem" Click next. You will then be asked what ports to add to this modem, you will then add all of the ports that the RIM Virtual Serial Port are using. After this click finish and you will be done.
Verify your Modem is functioning
To Verify your modem simply go to the control panel, then Phone and Modem Options, in the tab that says "modems" you will see a new modem that says "Standard Modem" on port COMxx whatever the port is that it is using. You will then go to Properties, Diagnostics and click on the Query Modem button. You will see the results and it should say something like this:
ATQ0V1E0 - OK
AT+GMM - BlackBerry IPmodem
AT+FCLASS=? - OK
AT#CLS=? - OK
AT+GCI? - OK
AT+GCI=? - OK
ATI1 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem

ATI3 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI4 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI5 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
