Transportation Tips In Cape Cod
The Cape Cod National Seashore is known worldwide for its beautiful, sandy beaches and enjoyable weather. This makes it a destination that people come from around the world to visit and experience the unique Atlantic maritime culture. Cape Cod travel is easy if you know how to get there and how to get around while you're there. Follow these tips as you plan the transportation for your trip.
Air Travel
There are two major airports that are relatively close to Cape Cod. The most common airport that people choose to use is the Logan International Airport, located in Boston, Massachusetts. Another popular option is the T.F. Green Airport, which is located in Providence, Rhode Island. If you choose to fly in to either of these airports, you can also rent a car or use shuttle services that will take you between the airport and the Cape Cod area.
If you're looking for a more local approach, you may want to fly in to the Barnstable Municipal Airport, which is located in Hyannis on the peninsula itself. Because this airport is smaller than the others, however, it does not offer the same type of commercial flights that the others do.
Water Travel
If you're traveling to Cape Cod, chances are that you will want to visit some of the islands that surround the peninsula. There are a range of ferry services available as well as more deluxe cruises that you can take advantage of. Some services just take multiple trips across the water, so you can choose how much time you want to spend on the islands. Others are scheduled sightseeing cruises, which may allow you to see more destinations.
There are two regular highway bridges that cross the Cape Cod Canal; they are the Sagamore Bridges and the Bourne Bridge. There is also a railroad bridge that offers some passenger transportation.
Peninsula Travel
The Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority provides a bus services in and around the peninsula. During peak tourism season, the transit authority provides extra trolley and shuttle services to accommodate the higher volume of people. There are also fixed bus routes that run year-round and provide very low-cost transportation. CCRTA even provides a door-to-door service that you can book by appointment if you are looking for public transportation that is more personalized to your travel needs. They also offer a relatively new "flex" service daily that runs on a regular route but will deviate from its route for up to 3/4 of a mile in order to accommodate those who have difficulty getting to a regular bus stop for some reason.
There are a variety of car rental companies on Cape Cod if you want to rent a car or a motorcycle for your visit. This is not your cheapest option for transportation, but it will make planning your trip much easier as you will not have to work around public transportation. There are also scooter and bicycle rentals available, especially down by the beach.
The CapeFLYER Train can get you between the cape and Boston for a relatively low price, with many amenities included in the cost of your ticket. It runs on the weekends, so if you're looking to get to and from Cape Cod, you may want to consider this option. The Cape Cod Central Railroad also offers scenic train rides that can include things such as dinner as you ride the train. it is a great option for your Cape Cod travel if you want to ride in style and see the beautiful views that the peninsula has to offer.
