Domain Transfer Process What is the process to transfer domains to someone? There could be many reasons why someone wants to transfer his/her domain name to another person. The reason could be a merger or acquisition or the need for somebody else to manage the domain independently. There are two ways in which domain transfers can be made. You can transfer the ownership of the domain to someone else and keep the domain name registrar and web hosting service provider. The other way could be to transfer the domain from one registrar to another. How to transfer domains to someone else? Disable domain privacy You need to make sure that your domain privacy is disabled or paused if you want to transfer the ownership of your domain to someone else. You can do so from the control panel of your domain registrar. You can login to the control panel and go to the interface that lets you manage the domain. Unlock the domain name Once the privacy has been disabled or paused, your next step will be to unlock the domain name so that it can be transferred to somebody else. If you are in the control panel of the registrar, you will find a link to unlock the domain name. Get the transfer code Once the domain name has been unlocked, you will have to get a domain transfer code. This code will allow you to transfer the domain name to another person. There will be a link in the control panel where you can get the code. You can click on the link and note down the code. Give the transfer code to the new owner and initiate the domain transfer Once you get the domain transfer code, you need to give it to the person who the domain name is being transferred to. The transfer of the domain can be initiated by the new owner. In some cases, the registrar may allow you to enter the details of the new owner and initiate the transfer process. The control panel of the registrar will have a section that allows you to enter all the required details. Once the new owner's name, email address, etc are entered, the domain transfer process will be initiated. If you want to transfer a domain name, not only should you initiate the transfer process at your end, but you should also make sure that the person whom the name is being transferred to also accepts the transfer. Transfer of domain to a different registrar It is also possible to transfer a domain name from one domain registrar to another. The entire policy on the transfer of domain names between registrars has been given by ICANN. There are certain things that you need to keep in mind when you transfer your domain name to someone else. These things are given below. • Your domain name at the current registrar should be unlocked. • It should be fully paid at the current registrar • The domain name should not have lapsed or expired. If it has, then its status will be “Registrar Hold” • You should be the owner or registrant of the domain. • The ownership of the domain name should not be under any kind of dispute. • The name should not be registered within the last 60 days • It should not have been transferred to you within the last 60 days You can initiate the domain transfer process if you keep these things in mind. This way, you will not lose out on any time once the transfer has been started and it will save you any unforeseen costs that may be involved in undoing the entire process.
