Tips for Parents Who Want More Wholesome Entertainment at Home
With kids so connected to the internet nowadays, it's challenging for parents to make sure everything their children absorb is wholesome and leaves a good impression. Even with parental blocks on the computers and cable, kids can still wind up gaining conflicting messages from cartoons and their favorite video games.
If you want to ensure your children are getting wholesome entertainment, try implementing these tips so they can have fun and learn.
Limit Electronic UseIt's very easy for the TV, computer, iPad, Game Boy, and every other electronic in sight to become a babysitter. Although kids have a great time watching their favorite shows and playing games, these devices don't equip them with any of the skills they need to thrive. If you want your children to gain more out of their free time, limit their electronic usage. The American Academy of Pediatricians recommends no more than two hours of screen time per day, as well as removing TVs and computers from children's' bedrooms. Doing so won't just bring them out and around the family more, but it will also decrease the risk of them watching something inappropriate.
Start Reading as a FamilyIt's recommended that children read for at least 20 minutes every day. Those who do retain more information, are better listeners, and do better in school. The best part about reading is that you're able to find books that tackle specific challenges your child may be facing, and provide them with material that gives them role models and teaches them important morals.
Get ActiveEveryone benefits from exercise and whether it's taking the dog for a walk or a spirited game of tag in the backyard, playing with your kids is a great way to get your own recommended 30 minutes of cardio every day. Ask your child what they like to do, or if there are any skills they want to learn. You two could try yoga, learn how to play soccer, or pick up some new dance moves using the great choreography tutorials on YouTube. Classes like karate and swimming are also great for teaching new skills, getting kids active, and helping them find new avenues of entertainment.
Quality time with your children is mutually beneficial. Talking to them, asking about their day, and taking an interest in their lives is a way to build trust and instill confidence in them that will help them make better decisions. The key to this type of interaction isn't shielding them from harmful media, but helping them adopt the mindset necessary to choose wholesome entertainment instead. Of course, you can’t cut out all entertainment completely so do make sure you check ratings on movies you buy and talk to your Direct Cable provider about what parental guides they have available. With the right blocks, and a good compromise on types of entertainment, you can be sure you and your kids make good entertainment choices.
