Weddings Follow A New Trend
MORE Aussie couples are opting to say ‘I do' aboard and are marking the occasions with a truly memorable experience.
Whether it is on an exotic island by azure waters, rugged up in woollens atop an icy glacier or in a perfectly manicured rose garden, lovebirds are flying from their nest to have a wedding away from home.
Escape Travel's national marketing manager Karen Cooke said beach weddings in the Maldives, Mauritius, Maui, Fiji, Thailand and the Whitsundays had been a popular choice for decades, but a new generation of Australian couples is looking elsewhere.
“Tahiti has gained popularity recently, following the blockbuster movie Couples Retreat, along with places made famous by celebrity weddings, such as Bora Bora, the Caribbean and Aspen,” said Ms Cooke.
“More unusual weddings ideas include plunging into the Great Barrier Reef for a ceremony underwater, hiking to the top of the glaciers in New Zealand or holding a fairytale wedding in a medieval castle at Disneyland.
“For a truly cultural experience, couples can dress in traditional Japanese kimono attire and hold their ceremony at a world-heritage site in Kyoto.”
Ms Cooke said one of the reasons why many lovers are choosing to get married overseas is because it is cheaper
“Affordability is a big issue, particularly in Asia, where you can often book an entire venue for the occasion, plus get all the extra trimmings for almost half the price they charge in Australia,” she said.
“Some couples want their wedding to be an intimate event, with only their close family and friends, so by holding the wedding overseas they can cut down the guest list.”
Another way to save money is to combine the wedding ceremony with the honeymoon in one trip. This creates a whole new experience to share together, whether it is adventurous or cultural.
