How to Set Up Your First Account at HostGator?
So now you have made research in hosting and decided to purchase the Hostgator service. You used the hostgator coupon code so that you get a discount. Now you have your hostgator account. Do you know how to setup your first domain? If you don't know then I will teach you. I am here to help you.
Domain Setup
When you sign up with HostGator, you need to give the domain name. If you don't have any domain name then you register a new domain name at HostGator otherwise you choose the option I already have a domain name.
If you select the domain name at the time of HostGator sign up and let the HostGator register a domain name on behalf of you then you won't have to do many setting. The setup is already done by HostGator.
I don't suggest you to register a domain name through hostgator. Since hostgator charges more for domain registration. If you want a cheap domain and a good service then you can register a domain name through any other domain registrar who offers domain at cheap rate.
I assume that you have registered a domain name through another domain name registrar and sign up for the hostgator hosting service. If that's the case then the first thing you need to do is setup a name servers at your registrar.
Setup Name Servers
When you want to set up HostGator name servers at domain name registrar, you first need to find the name servers. HostGator offer different name servers for different accounts.
To find the name servers, first login to cPanel using your username and password. Now scroll down to the end of the page. On the left side navigation, under the Account Information section, you will see Name Servers details. Note down the name servers.
Now go to your registrar's account. We will go to name.com and login there. There under the account setting, there is a option for change name servers for the domain. Click there and it will ask you to set the new name server. Remember, every registrar set it's default name servers. So you first need to remove the default name servers and need to enter the new name servers from HostGator.
Upload the First File
Now you name server setup is complete, give it 24 to 48 hours for the fully DNS propagation. After that it will work just fine.
Since the name servers are set up, you need to upload your first file to the server. When anybody access your domain name URL, she will come to your hostgator server to fetch the web page. All your web pages are served from public_html directory from your account.
Public_html directory is under your home directory. You need to setup and FTP client first to upload files to your server. Your default FTP user name is same as your hostgator cPanel username and password is also same as cPanel password.
So now you have FTP client setup. Upload html files to your account and enjoy the new website.
