Orchid Types: Over 25,000 Species Orchids are thought to be the second largest group of flowering plants on earth. Yes, there are somewhere between 22,000 and 26,000 species of orchids. To put it in perspective, there is four times the number of orchid species as there are mammal species. The “orchid” comes from the Greek work “Orkhis” which means testicle. The root of an orchid has a shape similar to a testicle. John Lindley coined the word in 1845. Orchids grow all over the world except in places that are covered with ice or desert. You can also grow orchids in your own home and some are a lot easier to grow then others. Easy to grow orchid types: • Cattleya orchids. These are the American Orchid Society's favorite orchid (aos.org). You may have seen them in corsages that are common around Mother's Day. The blooms are big and beautiful and you often see them in lavender or purple but they come in a variety of colors. They're named after William Cattley who was the first man to bring them from South American to England in 1818. • Phalaenopsis orchids or moth orchids. They are called moth orchids because their blooms resemble butterflies (or moths). More Americans grow Phalaenopsis orchids than any other type of orchid. The Phalaenopsis was first noted by Carolus Linnaeus in 1753. He's considered to be the Father of Modern Botany. The blooms of a phalaenopsis orchid can last for two or three months inside a house. The blooms can be a large variety of different colors. • Paphiopedilum or Lady's Slippers Orchids. Sometimes it's called the “moccasin flower”. This orchid was named, in 1886, by a man called Ernst Hugo Heinrich Pfitzer. It was named for the Greek temple, “Paphos” and “Pedilum” comes from “Pedilon”, meaning slipper in Ancient Greek. One of the reasons they're so popular is because they bloom for weeks on end. These orchids bloom in a large variety of very bright colors. This is an orchid that blooms in the wild in the United States. • Dendrobium orchids. Dendrobium orchids are a genus of orchids that was established by Olof Swartz in 1799. The name comes from the Greek words for tree (Dendron) and life (Bios). It literally means “one who lives on trees” and, in the wild, dendrobium orchids are epiphytic orchids, or an orchid type that lives on trees. The blooms of dendrobium orchids will last up to six weeks in your house if you decide to grow this orchid type. • Oncidium Orchids. Oncidium Orchids were also first described by Olof Swartz (1800). The word “Oncidium” comes from the Greek word “Onkos” which means swelling. Swartz called the Oncidium this because the lower lip of oncidium blooms has a swelling on it. Oncidium flowers come in different shades of red, white, pink and yellow. Often the petals of the blooms are ruffled and each bloom has an extremely large lip. Florists call them spray orchids. So, there thousands and thousands of different types of orchids but some are more suitable and easy to grow in the home than others. If you decide to acquire one of the types of orchids mentioned above, it is highly recommended that you do some research into the type or types of orchids that you choose. Every orchid has different requirements and if you try to satisfy these requirements your orchid will have a long life and beautiful blooms!
