The Pros And Cons Of Vehicle GPS Tracking
Logistics and transport is an essential part of business and moving goods and equipment to where they are required keeps the business world going. Such businesses usually have a fleet of vehicles and depending on the size of the company, this can range from just a few to several hundred. Most logistics companies now fit their vehicles with GPS systems. Global positioning satellite systems are devices that work by communicating with satellites to give your exact location. They can be used to plan routes and also give the location of the vehicle. As with everything in life, there are pros and cons.
The good points are that the GPS devices are affordable now, they used to be very expensive but as the technology has advanced and they have become more available, the price has fallen. They are also very easy to use.
They allow your logistics manager to plan routes so that vehicles are able to make as many deliveries as possible in a particular area.
The GPS allows you to track vehicles and you are able to pinpoint where they are at any time. This has many benefits as you will be able to update customers who enquire about their deliveries and give an estimation as to time of delivery. It also means that the vehicles are only used for the job and employees can be tracked if the vehicle is used for personal use, if you suspect the mileages are a bit high.
It improves the driving skills of employees. As the GPS monitors mileage, speed and fuel consumption, employees may well be more inclined to drive with more diligence and as such will save the company money.
As they track location, they can be excellent safety devices in the event of breakdown or accident and help can be sent as soon as is necessary to the correct place.
The downsides are that whilst the prices are dropping, it can be a very expensive enterprise to equip all your vehicles with the devices in one go. You would be able to put the cost against tax as a legitimate business expense but you will need to have the funds to pay for it first.
Employees might not be too happy when you announce that you will be using global positioning satellite devices to track their movements. It could cause trust issues with some and they may feel that you are invading their privacy. You can of course reassure your staff that this is not the case and that the purpose of using the GPS systems is to assist them with their journeys and save the company money so that it can be more streamlined and competitive.
If you are planning on equipping your logistics vehicles with GPS and can afford to take this step, it can be really helpful to your business and allow it to evolve. By weighing up the pros and cons, you can decide for yourself whether this is the right step for your business to take and whether it will be beneficial in the long term.
