An Overview Of How Different ID Printers Function
Identification (ID) cards are used in many locations from business offices to universities. Modern cards are often used for electronic access and security. Using a third-party printing service to create ID cards can become cumbersome and inefficient for larger institutions. ID printers give businesses the ability to create professional and functional ID cards whenever necessary. It can be helpful to understand exactly how different ID printers work.
Printing Techniques
ID printers can use two different techniques in order to print to a plastic card. The first technique is known as dye sublimation. This process uses cyan, magenta and yellow ribbons. The dye on the ribbon is quickly heated until it forms a gas. This gas is directed towards the card with a precision head. The gas then permeates the plastic material creating a colored dot. Cyan, magenta and yellow can be combined to form nearly any color. The most common technique for printing black is called thermal transfer. Thermal transfer uses a heating element and head to deposit black ink directly onto the surface of a card. Many machines will use both processes to produce high quality ID cards.
Badge Printers
A less complicated type of ID printer is a badge printer. These devices are very similar to specialized ink jet printers. The units are normally modified to accept ribbons of perforated or self-adhesive paper that can be used as a badge. These machines use traditional printing techniques and ink cartridges to create paper ID badges that can be placed in plastic sleeves or laminated.
Reverse Transfer Printing
Some ID printers use a technique known as reverse transfer printing to create a card with a laminated surface. This type of printer is loaded with standard printing ink, the plastic cards and a roll of a thin heat-activated transparent film. The machine prints the information and images for the ID card in reverse on the back of the film. The film is then pressed against the surface of the card and sealed in place with heat and pressure. The result is a tamper-resistant ID card with high-quality printed graphics and text. Reverse transfer printing is popular because it allows printing on new smart cards that contain integrated circuits or radio frequency identification (RFID) chips without damaging the electronics.
Magnetic Stripes
Many ID printers include the ability to encode or modify the information within a magnetic stripe on the back of a card. The machine uses a complex internal mechanism to align the bars of magnetic material within the stripe in one of two directions. Bars will be read as a zero or one depending on the orientation. Businesses or other institutions that have ID printers can encode any combination of digits on the back of the card. This can make each card unique and gives the business the ability to replicate cards that have been lost or stolen.
Software
All ID card printers are controlled by design and printing software. The software is normally a customized program that can import images and design original templates. The templates allow a business to produce identically formatted ID cards whenever necessary. Some ID printers also have universal serial bus (USB) ports so that they can be used without a computer to print premade cards stored on a portable USB drive.
