RockMelt : Feature Review plus Support
RockMelt is a relatively new browser that was launched at the end of 2010 with partial funding from Marc Andreessen, co-founder of Netscape Communications Corporation. Netscape, the world's first web browser, was a product of Netscape Communications Corp. RockMelt, on the other hand, is the newest entrant to the browser playing field, adding heat to the already smoldering ‘browser wars'. In this article, we will closely examine the browser, its' plus and minus points to help you decide if RockMelt is for you. For RockMelt Support service, you can contact a third-party service provider.
RockMelt is built on the Google Chrome platform; therefore, Chrome users will find a familiar looking interface in RockMelt. In addition to quick startup and browsing, which are the hallmarks of Chrome, this new browser also features tabbed browsing, an address cum search bar and toolbar customization via RSS feeds or apps. RockMelt 5 is the latest available, stable version of this browser to date.
USP of this browser lies in its' extensive Facebook integration into users' browsing experience. When you start RockMelt for the first time, it asks you to login to your Facebook account, although, this is not necessary to be able to browse. Its User Interface (UI) makes it possible to access almost all Facebook features from within the browser, without having to visit the Facebook webpage, while you simultaneously continue browsing other pages. This means you can publish, comment, chat with friends or view their profiles without making the effort to switch tabs.
A vertical bar to the left of the browser displays your favorite Facebook contacts. Click their picture to view their updates in a separate pop-up, without losing your current tab. Any links posted by them open in a separate tab. A different window is used to chat with or message a friend. Moreover, it is possible to share web-links on Facebook or Twitter as well. A bar, called an ‘edge', to the right of the browser displays your RSS feeds, shortcuts to Gmail, YouTube, CNN, Tumblr etc, a Facebook friend list you do not want to miss updates from and a badge to post Twitter updates.
This is not the first attempt at integrating social networking into an internet browser; Flock is MySpace-integrated Firefox and there many apps, notably Mozilla's Ubiquity, for similar purposes. Therefore, RockMelt is just a new tool for Facebook and Twitter buffs to tinker with.
As you sign into your Facebook account on RockMelt, the browser collects all your data, inclusive of profile information, passwords, browsing history, apps and bookmarks, and syncs it with a centralized RockMelt cloud, hosted at Amazon's servers. While this is good in the sense you can login to RockMelt on any device to find your personalized version, privacy and security issues arise. Some users have reported RockMelt spams your contacts, even after you have stopped using the browser and changed your password, which is cause for concern.
Another key feature is the way RockMelt presents search results. As you enter keywords in the navigation bar, the browser displays top ten results in a separate pop-up. It also pre-fetches data from these websites so a webpage loads very quickly, once you click on it. If you enter another search phrase, results are overlaid on a new pop-up. This enables you to view separate search results, side-by-side.
However, RockMelt does contain a few bugs and users have reported some extensions don't work, badges become unresponsive when Facebook contact list is too large and messages won't show up in chat windows. Apart from this, there are obvious privacy issues with the browser.
Despite these unresolved issues, RockMelt undoubtedly has several features that may captivate social networking aficionados. If privacy is your foremost concern or you are not an avid social networker, RockMelt is not your browser. For help with RockMelt setup, you can always contact a trusted third-party RockMelt support provider.
