A Fun Game To Play
Even though it was only the beginning of October, the weather was cold enough for a number of friends and myself to sit in front of my new hanging gel fuel fireplace, enjoying it's warmth and the smell of Mountain Spruce from a wood scented candle. That same day, an e-mail had arrived on my computer with the top 100 queries during the last 48 hours from the largest Metacrawlers on the web. I had printed them out and since myspace was one of the first three words on that list, I had greeted everybody with 'welcome to my space'. Nobody gave that much thought but when I started to talk about music lyrics, pumpkin stencils, a background check for Paris Hilton and the yahoo ebay connection, my friends questioned my sobriety. I showed them the list and we decided that for the rest of the evening we all had to make as much use as possible of these top one hundred words. I offered a Last Stand DVD, potted flowers from Home Depot and sexy lingerie as prizes for those who could use the most words from the list and still make sense.
Everybody thought it was a funny idea, but while I served my famous hot chicken noodle soup the conversation first turned to Jessica Simpson because we had read that she had named her child Naruto. Definitely not one of the top 100 baby names. We wondered about names and their meanings and someone went to yahoo.com and someone else opened the dictionary to find out more. Of course there was nothing on unusual names like Naruto or Ludacris or Shakira. Finally we went back to the top 100 searched for words. We made up a rule that each word can only be used once and all words must be used up. In the beginning it was easy. Dog, cat, horses, maps, jokes, even scavenger hunt or map quest could easily be incorporated into one long sentence. Some used so many of the available words, that others feared there would be non left for them.
They were right. Once all the easy words had been used, it was much harder to make a long, sensible sentence out of words like evanescence, runescape, site:wexb.net etc. So we changed the rules and each person could write one sentence using as many of the words on the list as possible. Afterwards we read them out loud. Silly stuff was written. "When Lil Wayne, the family guy on the you tube decided to become a nudist there was panic at the disco because he looked so white and nerdy, while all the others who wanted to find singles were in their hot Halloween costumes," was one of the shorter sentences. At least it made sense. The frequency of Not making sense went up with the number of words used and things became more and more hilarious. In the end we had so much fun that I thought this could become a new craze for folks to do on winter evenings. So, light your fireplace, invite a bunch of friends, put on the food and drinks, hand out a list of words and let everyone be creative. I'll guarantee a fun evening.Below is the list of the top 100 queries from the last 48 hours, which represents the complete queries from the largest Metacrawlers on the web (Metacrawler/Dogpile etc..) for October 9. 2006.
