Activity And Horse Holidays In Tuscany
The park Sterpaia stretches on the southernmost tract of the coast of Tuscany Italy in the province of Livorno and includes a strand of flats wood that miraculously survived the deforestation but that was object, at the end of 1999, of an intervention that has incredibly condemned many big downy oaks.
A long and narrow shoreline is included in the protected area, marked off by two channels that run parallel to this coast of Tuscany: The Tombolo ditch and the Cervia ditch, to the north and south of Localita Torre del Sale respectively. Heavy erosion phenomena and the strong anthropic impact determined by beach tourists have significantly compromised the nature of the dune strip, which is now very small. Nevertheless, some plants of sea daffodil, seaside chamomile and seashore false bindweed still color the scorching sand in summer, more often colonized by the exotic Hottentot fig which its gaudy purple flowers.
On the top of the dune, there are shrubs of juniper, phillyrea and lentiscus, sometimes totally wrapped by the creepers of the stracciabrache, whose clusters, in October, hang bright from the branches of pine trees. The wet and sometimes flooded hollows are the kingdom of tamarisk, glasswort, particularly suggestive in winter when its stems turn red, and thorny shrubs of rush. Unfortunately, various species of exotic plants are scattered everywhere.
Farther from the sea, in the retrodunal strip, we find the best value of this protected area: a mesophilic wood, periodically flooded, characterized by plants that love deep and wet soil, such as the narrowleaf ash, the European oak and the elm. Used for a long time as grassland for Maremma cows, the Sterpaia wood has been damaged by the installation of an unauthorized camping ground, today totally removed, with relevant paths, embankments and heavy planting of exotic species, from the eucalyptus to the pittosporum, from the oleander to the invasive passionflower.
It was especially these plant that have been removed by the forest intervention. Nevertheless, the Sterpaia wood can still give an idea of how the forests that occupied the shorelines of Tuscany would appear before being cut to make room for crop fields. Accustomed to walk uncomfortable in woods and maquis full of suckers that, at every cut, return invasive, in this seedling forest, instead, we can walk at ease, overlooked by the wide foliage of age-old trees that filter the sunlight that unveils an undergrowth of spindle tree, viburnum, hawthorn and butcher's broom.
Quite surprisingly, together with ashes and maples of remarkable size, we face phillyrea, lentiscus and Italian buckthorns that reach and go past 30 cm of diameter. The wood provides a shelter to many birds, such as blue tits, great tits, wrens, robins, green woodpeckers, wrynecks and blackbirds. In the shrubs, you can discover toadstools and mushrooms of all colors and shapes. Come to Tuscany Italy for horse riding, mountain biking or walking. You will discover the remote areas of Tuscany.
