Good News For The Travel Industry
It seems that there is some good news to be had for the travel industry. Companies such as AAA and Travelocity are hearing good things from their consumers. They're going on vacation! A pickup in travel is expected starting with the Memorial Day weekend holiday.
AAA has released numbers, indicating that nearly 32.4 million people will be hitting the roads this summer. That is a 1.5 percent increase over last year. While it's still below the 35.3 million travelers in 2007, it's a sign that things are moving in the right direction.
Last year saw significantly higher gas prices, including gas over $4.00 per gallon and the beginning of the slump in the economy. But, it seems that vacationers are more optimistic this summer. They just can't give up their vacation time. The trend, however, is that most people will stay closer to home, saving money by either staying in state or bordering states.
A recent Travelocity survey showed that 29 percent of those that were surveyed will take some form of vacation during the Memorial Day weekend. This is quite an increase over the 24 percent of people who said that they would take a vacation last year. And, another significant result from Travelocity's surveys is that nearly two-thirds of those surveyed said that they won't cut back on their vacation spending.
The only sector that is not benefitting from the vacationers is the airline industry. Airline professionals are expecting that airline travel will be down 6.6 percent over 2008. And, this news comes despite the fact that airline prices are at historic lows. The airline industry expects international travel to fall 7.7 percent from last year and that domestic travel will drop 6.6 percent.
While this is definitely bad news, the good news for the airline industry is that their offers are attracting leisure travelers, who are taking advantage of cheap flights in the United States and to Europe. The business travel market – the bread and butter of the airline industry – is not expected to rebound this year.
The news from most in the industry is that the best time to take a vacation is now. Don't wait for additional deals. Book your flight now while the prices are at these levels. Airlines may start eliminating flights or limiting their flights to certain destinations, which could cause airline ticket prices to rise later in the year.
