How to Refill Ink Cartridges
The majority of inkjet printers use ink cartridges that are able to be repeatedly used. As the cost of ink can be high, refilling your cartridges can save you a considerable amount of money.
You can purchase inkjet refill kits from an office supplies shop in your locality. The kits typically comprise ink, syringes and an instruction booklet. The colour refill kits from your printer will feature yellow, blue and red ink, each contained within separate bottles.
You will need to remove the cartridge from your printer before you begin to refill them. Your printer is likely to house a black cartridge and a colour cartridge. Ensure that you remove the correct cartridge. You will find holes for the ink under a label on the top of the cartridge. Pull off this label to access these holes.
Place the ink cartridge onto a non-porous surface that has been covered with a protective sheet and pull on some latex gloves to prevent your hands from becoming covered in the ink. If you are worried about spoiling your clothing, you may wish to wear old clothes during the refilling process. The process of refilling your cartridges can be messy; ink has the ability to smear everywhere and can stain your carpets and flooring so it is essential that you are careful. Ensure that you are armed with wet paper towels to help you to mop up any ink spills with ease.
The holes on the top of your ink cartridge will relate to a specific colour. Match the colours up to the bottles found in your refill kit. Concentrating on one colour at a time, insert the correct ink into the hole on the cartridge using the syringe. It is essential that you refill your ink cartridge slowly otherwise you will risk spilling the ink. As the ink may take time to be absorbed into the ink cartridge, ensure that you provide yourself with enough time to complete the task undisturbed. If you are refilling your cartridge while small children and animals are in the house, ensure that you do not provide them with access to the ink cartridge or the refill kit.
Once you have refilled all of the colours, place the label back over the refill holes. Ensure that the label adheres to the cartridge securely. If it fails to do so, use a piece of sticky tape to keep the label in place. The refill holes must be covered up to prevent the ink from evaporating. Once you have covered the holes, insert your cartridge into the printer and follow the instructions provided by your printer's manufacturer.
Ink cartridges can often be repeatedly refilled. However, some manufacturers equip their cartridges with a chip that prevents you from refilling the cartridges yourself. Others fit a chip within the printer to prevent the printer from accepting refilled cartridges. In the event that your printer is unable to accept refilled cartridges, you may have to purchase brand new cartridges and, when purchasing your next printer, should take the time to ensure that its cartridges are able to be refilled.
