Online Video Is Reshaping The Internet
In the ever-changing world of the Internet, online video content is big and getting bigger every day. It's not just YouTube, or other sites dedicated to featuring the fruits of web site video production; all savvy website owners looking to engage the wide-ranging internet audience are turning to video content of all kinds, from documentary video production to educational video to music videos and more.
This is based on more than anecdotal evidence or a gut feeling that video is taking over; there is solid research to encourage including videography as a major pillar of website design. According to a recent report by the Nielsen Company (the world famous marketing and media organization that measures TV ratings, among other things), the number of Internet users watching online video has increased more than 340 percent since 2003. Every year, both the number of different videos watched and the amount of time users spend online watching video content increases.
Another report—the SheSpeaks Annual Social Media Study—tracked usage patterns of women online and found that during 2009, 85 percent of them frequently watched video content on the Internet.
Finally, a legal research group, FindLaw, found that the number of Internet users seeking law firm information online and then making further contact via email or phone calls after viewing the websites of law firms, increased dramatically for sites that featured video content. Some firms reported an increase of 50 percent once they included video productions on their site.
This heavy usage of online video is changing the expectations of those who surf the Internet. One of the primary ways they want to take in website information today is through video. Not only because they are growing accustomed to absorbing online information in this manner; video offers distinct inherent advantages. For example, information that is difficult or slow to explain via text can be presented quickly in an easy-to-comprehend, engaging video format. Another advantage to video content is the boom of social media. Users of social networks such as Twitter and Facebook love to share photos and videos, both their own and those they discover on the web. A further advantage is the fact that since search engines now incorporate universal search—which means all results, whether text, video or blogs are searched and end up in the results, all mixed together—a compelling video on a website will help searchers find the site much quicker.
As with all online content, the higher the quality of the video, the better the chance for links to the site that hosts it. An amateur quality video will turn off Internet surfers as quickly as poorly written text content or ugly graphic design in a website's layout. Many site owners hire professional production companies to help them create their video content, both in the filming stage and for post production editing. Video production companies can help increase the quality of all aspects of your videos, from the music to the script to production values and more.
If a website owner takes the time and effort to make and add high quality video productions to a site, the benefits will be great and long-lasting.
