An Eating Disorder is a serious problem as it can affect a person both physically and mentally. It is difficult to detect if a person is suffering from an eating disorder because such people often hide their problem. People with eating disorders have it ingrained in their minds that whatever they eat will make them put on lot of weight.
Eating disorder is getting prevalent in the cities of today. We may call it as psychiatric disorder. It is caused mostly by no regular exercise, no control over consumption of food and eating junk foods containing high calories and cholesterol. Because of these habits people also suffer some serious problems like blood pressure, diabetes other than eating disorder.
Compulsive overeating is an eating disorder at the other end of the spectrum. It is one the lesser understood types of eating disorders. Compulsive overeaters have an overwhelming compulsion to eat, even when they are not hungry or after they are full. They often overeat for emotional reasons. They may eat when they are sad, anxious, lonely, or experiencing other uncomfortable emotions.
Eating disorder which includes anorexia, bulimia and compulsive overeating are some of the serious forms of mental illness. Living a life with this illness imparts a feeling of insecurity, shame, anxiety. Mostly, the individual is left to struggle alone because of the complicated combination of physical and mental symptoms, but with proper medication, this illness can be cured.
Two of the common disorders, anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa have been classified as illnesses, whereas the third type of eating disorder, binge eating, falls into the group of dangerous and possibly uncontrollable, but has not been classified as an illness.
Causes of eating behavior vary greatly per individual. Some are perfectionist and feel that the only thing that can absolutely control in their lives is their weight. Environmental causes include media influence and influence of family and friends. Biological causes of eating disorders include obsessive compulsive disorder and depression, which can cause levels of important body elements to be deficient.
Drastic increase in exercise - another common sign of an eating disorder in your child is if they begin obsessing about exercise. Someone who goes from moderate exercise to an almost fanatical level may be suffering from an eating disorder and trying to lose weight through exercise as well.
Eating disorders affect millions of people in today's world and are a by-product of the stress and strain of modern life. The condition called an eating disorder, or EDR, as it is referred to, occurs in various forms. It is commonly thought that an eating disorder is over eating, but this is not true; neither do the disorders relate to the appetite or digestive system of the individual.
